Counselling for Chronic Illness and Chronic Pain in Victoria, BC

Counselling can Support you during Chronic Illness or Chronic Pain

If you are living with chronic pain or chronic illness, you may find it hard to cope with the emotional impact on your life. For many people, their chronic illness or chronic pain impacts every aspect of life from their identity, self-esteem, and self-image to relationships and work. These burdens may come while you are already struggling to adapt to high levels of pain and discomfort. Our team of therapists will use diverse clinical approaches to adapt to your needs while recognizing your capacity.

Therapy can be a powerful space for you to understand your own needs, learn to communicate your boundaries and ask for the support you need, and grieve the losses you have experienced. Your therapist will guide you as you rebuild your sense of self.

As you work to understand the body-mind link, our somatic, multimodal, body-based approach will help you to navigate your thoughts and feelings as well as the sensations in your body. We know that mental and physical health are linked, and we encourage you to book a complimentary introduction appointment with one of our therapists to discuss how we can help you live through chronic illness or chronic pain with joy, curiosity, and intention.

At Bodymind Counselling, we have worked with clients facing conditions including chronic pain, ME-CFS, Long Covid, respiratory diseases, arthritis, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, PCOS, and many other conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions about Counselling FOR CHRONIC PAIN AND CHRONIC ILLNESS

  • Yes. At Bodymind, we are very focused on the mind-body connection and we consider working with a therapist a key aspect of any pain management plan. We will guide you through aspects of pain management like becoming curious about the sensations in your body and the thoughts and feelings that they bring up for you, noticing triggers, grounding yourself when you are overwhelmed, asking for support, and processing any emotions, including grief, that living with chronic pain has brought up for you.

  • While each medical plan is different, BodyMind will work with yours to the best of our ability.

We believe everyone should be able to access therapy, regardless of their financial situation or income. Bodymind Counselling offers counselling sessions with highly trained and carefully selected student counsellors, who have completed the academic portion of a Masters in Counselling program. These students are hand-picked from a long list of applicants, and undertake a 12 month practicum at our clinic. They offer sessions both in person, and via secure video therapy. These sessions cost $30 for your first appointment and $60 plus GST for subsequent appointments.

Students receive intensive supervision and lots of instruction during their 12-month practicum, and are able to provide clients with a longer-term relationship and more sessions than many other short-term, low-fee options can provide.

  • While this varies greatly from person-to-person, clients experiencing acute challenges often benefit from approximately 6-8 appointments while clients unpacking chronic problems may need more. We know that time and cost are a barrier for many of our clients, and we will work hard to make every appointment count for you. Some people may experience great relief almost immediately, and others may want to work with their therapist over a period of months or years.

  • Our team provides in-person appointments for clients based in Victoria, BC and virtual appointments for clients in other locations or locals who select virtual therapy for any reason.
