Counselling for Burnout and Stress Management

THERAPY TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND AND MANAGE BURNOUT AND STRESS

YOU DON’T HAVE TO ENDURE STRESS ALONE – THERAPY CAN HELP

Stress is a normal part of life, but the way we manage and respond to it can make a big difference in how it impacts us. Longer term, stress can also lead to burnout, so learning to work with stress is an invaluable skill.

Stress can be caused by many factors and every person responds differently to their experience. Our team of therapists at Bodymind Counselling have worked with clients experiencing stress due to school, parenting, caregiving, relationships, financial concerns, career, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, concern about the state of the world, and many other life experiences. For many people, complex health problems or caring for an ill family member are another major source of stress. In many cases, people find themselves swamped when they are experiencing multiple stressors at the same time. If you are struggling to keep up with school and caregiving, dealing with racism or discrimination in the workplace, juggling parenting and career, or any other combination of stressful circumstances unique to you, you do not have to suffer through it alone.

Book an exploratory free consultation with a member of our team to discuss the modalities we can use to support you. From talk therapy to more body-based approaches and also the Safe and Sound Protocol, our team uses a multi-modal approach to support you and help you find solutions.

COUNSELLING FOR BURNOUT IN VICTORIA, BC

Stress is a natural response to perceived stress, but prolonged or excessive stress can lead to burnout. Burnout is a serious condition characterized by a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. Although burnout was previously mostly associated with the workplace, we know that it can be caused by all kinds of different circumstances. Women and neurodivergent people experience higher rates of burnout, but it can occur to anyone at any stage of life.

If you are experiencing burnout, you may feel tired or exhausted, experience little to no enthusiasm or joy, have a negative outlook, and an inability to perform tasks you used to be able to perform, especially if they are related to the source of your burnout. Burnout can often look very similar to depression or anxiety. While depression and anxiety don’t normally improve with rest, these are different conditions and unlike with depression and anxiety, you will usually feel temporary improvements to your burnout if you rest from the conditions that caused it.

OUR APPROACH TO BURNOUT RECOVERY

Burnout recovery can be complex and challenging, especially because the circumstances that cause burnout often cannot be easily removed. Most people can’t rest long term from their caregiving responsibilities, career, education, or other responsibilities that lead to burnout, and we know that we cannot simply turn off such stressors as racism, sexism, homophobia, or transphobia.

Counselling is an effective recovery tool for many people experiencing burnout. We encourage you to book an introductory consultation with a member of our team and start on your road to recovery. Mindfulness, stress reduction and adaptation, somatic practices, and emotion-focused talk therapy are just some of the modalities our team can provide to support you as you recover from burnout. Our holistic counselling approach is highly effective for burnout.

We know that burnout rates are on the rise, and we are here to support you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy for Burnout

  • Burnout recovery is different for each person who experiences it, but in our practice we have supported many clients as they recover from burnout. While this healing process sometimes takes longer and is more complicated than we wish it to be, recovery is possible for most people. Therapy can help you not only recover from acute burnout, but gain the skills you need to prevent burnout in the future.

  • Many health conditions ranging from thyroid disorders to menopause and perimenopause and more can cause symptoms that may mirror burnout. For this reason, we recommend that you seek medical care in tandem with your Bodymind Counselling sessions to investigate any alternative causes. That being said, regardless of the underlying cause, therapy is a highly effective intervention if you are experiencing low stress tolerance, low motivation, fatigue or any other symptoms that may or may not be burnout.

  • Most extended benefit plans do cover the services of a Registered Clinical Counsellor or a Registered Social Worker, but please check your plan to confirm. Unfortunately, MSP does not cover private counselling services.

We believe everyone should be able to access therapy, regardless of their financial situation or income. Bodymind Counselling offers counselling sessions with highly trained and carefully selected student counsellors, who have completed the academic portion of a Masters in Counselling program. These students are hand-picked from a long list of applicants, and undertake a 12 month practicum at our clinic. They offer sessions both in person, and via secure video therapy. These sessions cost $30 for your first appointment and $60 plus GST for subsequent appointments.

Students receive intensive supervision and lots of instruction during their 12-month practicum, and are able to provide clients with a longer-term relationship and more sessions than many other short-term, low-fee options can provide.

  • While this varies greatly from person-to-person, clients experiencing acute challenges often benefit from approximately 6-8 appointments while clients unpacking complex or chronic problems may need more. We know that time and cost are a barrier for many of our clients, and we will work hard to make every appointment count for you. Some people may experience great relief almost immediately, and others may want to work with their therapist over a period of months or even years.

  • Our team provides in-person appointments for clients based in Victoria, BC and virtual appointments for clients in other locations in British Columbia who prefer virtual therapy for any reason.
